Marriage Process: Step-by-Step Guide
This guide provides an overview of the necessary steps to complete both the legal and religious marriage procedures.

  1. Submit the Marriage Notice Form
    – Download and complete the marriage notice form for both parties here.
    – Ensure the form is printed and signed by both the bride and groom.
    – Once completed, bring the forms to BIC office to be signed by the marriage officiant.
    – Please note that a £50 fee is payable to Belfast Islamic Centre at the time of signing the marriage notice application form by the officiant.
  2. Schedule an Appointment with Belfast City Council
    – Contact Belfast City Council to arrange an appointment for submitting the forms.
    – Along with the completed marriage notice forms, bring the required supporting documents, such as:
    – Passports for both parties.
    – Birth certificates for both parties.
    – During the appointment, the council will review the documents and process your application.
  3. Required Notice Period
    – You must submit the marriage notice at least 28 days prior to the planned ceremony.
    – After submission, Belfast City Council will issue a Marriage Schedule which you will need for the ceremony.
  4. Islamic Ceremony Requirements
    – On the day of the Islamic ceremony, ensure you bring the Marriage Schedule to the wedding venue.
    – You must also bring two witnesses who will be present during the ceremony.
    – The Imam will conduct the ceremony in accordance with Islamic tradition, and it is required that the guardian’s consent (Wali) for the bride is obtained and confirmed before proceeding.
    – The Imam will ensure that the guardian’s consent has been sought and verified prior to conducting the ceremony.
  5. Obtain the Legal Marriage Certificate
    – After the Islamic ceremony, ensure that the Marriage Schedule is fully completed and signed by all parties (officiant and witnesses).
    – Return the signed Marriage Schedule to Belfast City Council.
    – The council will then issue your legal marriage certificate, completing the process.
